Synopsis

The STEAM&Sports project, developed under the Erasmus+ KA220-SCH framework, addresses a critical challenge in contemporary education: fostering meaningful engagement with STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) among diverse student populations. By integrating sports as a pedagogical bridge, the project proposes an innovative, inclusive, and interdisciplinary approach that enhances both cognitive and physical development.
The project is grounded in the recognition that many students struggle to connect with STEAM subjects due to their perceived abstraction. In contrast, sports provide a universally relatable and motivating context. By linking STEAM concepts to real-world sports scenarios—such as biomechanics, data analysis, or physics of motion—learning becomes more tangible, engaging, and accessible. This approach is particularly effective in reaching underrepresented groups, including girls and students with low engagement in traditional academic settings.

The consortium, led by the Universidad de Burgos and composed of partners from five European countries, combines expertise from higher education, schools, and educational organisations. This transnational collaboration ensures diversity of perspectives and enhances the scalability and transferability of results across different educational systems.
The project is structured around five main outputs: (1) a comprehensive STEAM and Sports teaching guide, (2) a mobile application supporting interactive learning, (3) hands-on school-based experiences, (4) dissemination materials including video stories, and (5) an evaluation report assessing the effectiveness of the methodology. These outputs are supported by a learner-centred methodology that emphasises experiential learning, interdisciplinarity, and digital innovation.
In terms of impact, STEAM&Sports aims to increase student motivation, improve understanding of STEAM concepts, and promote healthier lifestyles through physical activity. Additionally, it supports teachers by providing innovative tools and training for interdisciplinary teaching. At a broader level, the project contributes to European priorities of inclusion, diversity, and the promotion of STEM/STEAM education.
Ultimately, the project demonstrates how combining educational domains traditionally treated separately can generate meaningful synergies, fostering both academic achievement and personal development. By situating learning within engaging and familiar contexts, STEAM&Sports offers a replicable model for future educational innovation in Europe.
