Synopsis

In 2021 the city of Burgos hosted the 16th Scientific Meeting of the Spanish Foundation for Modern History, coinciding with the eighth centenary of the laying of the foundation stone of Burgos’ Gothic cathedral. Such an important anniversary served as a framework for the reflection of numerous researchers who have contributed to this volume, entitled Stone by Stone: The Construction of Early Modern History in the Shadow of the Cathedrals. Here we bring together the work of nine prominent historians who analyse various aspects of the history of Spain and Europe in the Early Modern Age, ranging from the Black Legend to universities, the role of queens or the functioning of cathedrals.
